Suspects to be tried together in Powhatan murder case

Three suspects in a Powhatan murder case will be tried together. The decision was made during hearing today for two of the defendants. The Commonwealth’s Attorney says trying the group at once will make prosecuting them easier.

Senator John Watkins is absolutely right about returning the liquor business to the private sector. By allowing the State to own and monopolize liquor sales, we set a precedent for the Government to take over other businesses. Some would call that Socialism.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Senate has passed legislation allowing more liquor stores to open on Sundays. State-run liquor stores already are allowed to open on Sundays in Virginia Beach, Norfolk and northern Virginia.

Legislation by Delegate Tom Gear would expand that authority to his hometown of Hampton, as well as Portsmouth, Newport News, Chesapeake and Richmond.

Republican Senator John Watkins of Powhatan County implored his colleagues to reject the bill. He said the state should get out of the liquor business and turn it over to the private sector.

Nobody spoke in favor of the bill on the Senate floor Tuesday, but it passed anyway on a 22 to 17 vote. The House already has passed the bill, which now goes to Governor Tim Kaine.

BARTON, Paul A., 55, of Powhatan, passed away June 30, 2008. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Candis Denton Barton; two brothers and sister, George Barton of Henderson, Nevada, Loyd Barton and Charlet LePard, both of Bisbee, Arizona; also numerous nieces and nephews. He was the owner/operator of the Maaco on Hull Street for the last eight years. He loved the river and the ocean, music, especially the oldies, animals, the desert of Arizona and working on his property in Powhatan. He was passionate in his feelings and was loved by many. The family will receive friends Monday, July 7, from 4 to 8 p.m., with a service at 7 p.m. at the Woody Funeral Home - Huguenot Chapel, 1020 Huguenot Road. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, Powhatan. Interment at a later date.

Goochland Co. has called on Powhatan four times in the last month to help with high risk arrests. I think that says something about the quality of the officers and their training here in Powhatan.

We are proud of you guys. Be careful out there.

They were in Al Qaim about two weeks into the deployment when they lost Doc Martens in a humvee rollover on night patrol. Ted Dickson, one of the many Marines who considered Hospitalman Nathan Martens a friend and brother, ran in Doc’s memory on Independence Day at the Patriots 5K Run in Powhatan, Va. to benefit the The Families of the Wounded Foundation.
